At Under the Sun Learning Centers, we understand the importance of technology when it comes to a child’s love of learning. But unlike us adults who often feel the need to have the latest and greatest smartphones, young children aren’t nearly as picky. Here are some reasons to think twice about turning that old cell phone in for a measly $10 credit or tossing it straight into the garbage can.

What’s old to you is new to them!
Young children are known for finding the fun in just about anything. This is especially the case when it comes to the smartphones that they see grown-ups using day in and day out. Even if it is just an old flip-phone from before the days of touch screens, a child’s eyes will still light up with excitement as it is handed to them.

Your old phone doesn’t hold a charge? No problem!
As parents know, there’s nothing more creative than a child’s imagination. So even if your old cell phone doesn’t hold a charge or you can’t find that old-style charger, don’t let that stop you from passing it along to your child. Many children will still play for hours with a phone that isn’t even turned on, pretending they are calling anyone and everyone they can think of, having conversations even if nobody is on the other end.

The beauty of WiFi!
Although your old smartphone my no longer have the ability to make calls or send texts, your WiFi connection keeps it plenty active. With a WiF connection, you can still access app stores to download free, kid-friendly learning games that your child will love. And the best part? Most of these apps will continue work when WiFi connections aren’t available, making your old smartphone a portable game closet, just without all of the pieces and cleanup!

Helpful Tip: Avoid having your child access more than they should by disabling the phone’s WiFi connectivity when you’re not adding new games.
